Build a Planet of Your Own! Play Star City at Nate AppStore!

Rubicon Games’ first city building simulation game ‘Star City’ has finally launched in Nate AppStore this Thursday.  Adding a bit of twist to contemporary city-builders, Star City requires users to explore the hidden planets to mine various minerals, which are used in general construction activities.  Moreover, after exploring different planets, space shuttles bring cute aliens along with them, adding more space-like essence to the game.

Besides the game itself, Star City is also the first game in Nate platform to introduce NateOn Buddy API, which we mentioned in our earlier post.  Contemporary games have only allowed 1-chon network access, which only allows up to 300 friends to play with.  NateOn, however, has no limits to number of friends on list, significantly expanding the pool of individual network.  “NateOn API will provide a much easier environment for users to manage their list of social gaming partners without hindering privacy issues  related to 1-chon network,” says Geo-sung Lee, senior game director of Star City.

“I’m very happy and proud to present our first city-building game, ‘Star City’ to our users.  Our team has put a lot of effort into this game, especially on sustaining stability.”

Since action speaks more than thousand words, please try out our latest title ‘Star City’ and tell us what you think! Have fun then! :D

Shooting Star, Shooting Hopes to Charities

Shooting Star was launched together with Naver Social Apps, the latest social game platform.  Initially published throughout Naver Cafes, Shooting Star is now “shooting hopes” to charities in the form of online donation.  “Happy Bean” it is called, which is an online charity website sponsored by Naver.  Members of Naver Cafe can donate “Happy Beans”, which is also the term for a unit of donation which cost 100 KRW per each.  Collected beans from each Cafe is then donated to variety of organizations in need.

To motivate the culture of giving, Shooting Star is now shooting Happy Beans to reach out for those in needs.   The best Cafe with the highest sum of individual scores is rewarded with 10,000 Happy Beans (approximately $1000 worth) and every Cafe playing Shooting Star can participate in this donation competition.  Competition will take place for two weeks (15 Oct – 31 Oct) and the final winner will be presented on 1 November.

Play social games to increase social welfare!  We look forward to seeing the love and care spread throughout the online communities with Shooting Star :)

A chat with the Shooting Star Studio

It’s been almost two months since the launch of Shooting Star at Nate AppStore.  Behind the scene, however, there was the Shooting Star Studio who have put their utmost time and effort into the game.  Day and night, the Shooting Star Studio is continuously working hard to maintain high quality service for our users.  Today we are going to hear the behind stories of the making of the game.

SHA: Hello ^_^ Could you please introduce yourself and your team members?

Hi my name is Min-hyung Cho and I’m the PM / game designer of the game Shooting Star.  Our team is comprised of 6 people including me:

Artist Jae-gu Lee, designed all the character and map designs,

UI Designer Bora Hong, designed the neat UI and all the eye-catchy pop ups,

Programmer Jong-seok Moon, developed Shooting Star physics from A to Z,

Programmer Duckhee Lee, developed friends list and user info UI,

Server programmer Eunhwa Jeong, built secure server and database.

SHA: While developing Shooting Star, what difficulties have you faced?

Min-Hyung: When designing a game, the designer must be aware of every little parts of the game.  But it is much harder than it seems.  Every time I thought the game was “complete and perfect”, always followed an unexpected error. T_T

Jae-gu: For me, character motion design was most difficult.  But the feeling of accomplishment that follows was simply indescribable.

Bora: Since this was our team’s first game, there was no systemized development process.  Despite the shortage of time we had, there were a lot of new ideas jumping in and out, asking for continuous modification, which sometimes discouraged efficiency. T_T

Jong-seok: When the shot ball didn’t fall in to the right place but danced around instead…

Duckhee: Developing social games for me was a new experience. Flash, ActionScript, OpenSocial API were all new to me thus dealing with unexpected error was the most difficult part.

Eunhwa: Everything in this field was new to me.  Server, for example, is often exposed to many problems thus maintenance was my biggest mission.

SHA: What about the happiest moment? When was it?

Duckhee: I’ve always wanted to create a game of my own.  The more effort I’ve put into, the more I’m excited to see our game grow.

Min-hyung: All the time and effort that we have put into were all compensated when people started to play our game after launched in Nate.

Jae-gu: I still remember the first time when I tried out the test version.  I saw my art work actually moving and got goose bumps from it!!  Also whenever I see good comments about our game, I feel proud and happy.

Bora: The day when the game was first launched, I was so excited.  But above all, I treasure my team mates and the teamwork we’ve put into.

Jong-seok: When I finally killed all the bugs after the three full days of bug hunting…

Eunhwa: When I hear good comments about our game.  But I’m more content with the fact that I’m learning more and our teamwork is growing.

SHA: Could you please give us some hints about your next project?

Min-hyung: Our next game will be a Sim-game.  The more friends you play with, bigger the excitement and fun is guaranteed!  It is very addictive and at the same time very social.  Please stay tuned for our upcoming game! :D

SHA: Thank you Shooting Star team for your time. Do you have anything to say to your audience?

Eunhwa: It was a great experience working as a team.  Please look foward to our next game too! :)

Min-hyung: We love, and truly enjoy social games! We’ll come back with a better, fancier game! BByong!

Jae-gu: As more people are becoming more interested I social games, I’ll try to impress them with more fun and innovative game design~

Bora: I want to make social games more social.  We all have the same dream and I’m sure we’ll soon witness our dreams come true!

Jong-seok: Work til my code becomes more readable and beautiful!

Duckhee: We will conquer the Asian social games industry!! :)
